In a large bowl, combine:

  • Broil for 2 minutes at the end for browning.

Optional: Make Onion-Mushroom Gravy

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for best juiciness)

  • 1 egg (helps bind the patty)

  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs (optional – helps hold shape)

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the Mixture

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  2. Mix gently with your hands or a fork until just combined.

⚠️ Do not overmix — this makes the patties dense instead of tender.

2. Form the Patties

  1. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions.

  2. Shape each into a ¾-inch thick patty.

  3. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb — this helps them cook evenly and stay flat.

3. Cook the Patties

🔥 Grill Method:

  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F / 200°C).

  • Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side (for medium doneness).

  • Add cheese slices in the last 30 seconds if desired.

🍳 Pan-Fry Method:

  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.

  • Cook patties 3–5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.

🔥 Oven-Broil Method:

  • Place patties on a foil-lined baking sheet.

  • Broil on high for 4–5 minutes per side until cooked through and lightly charred.

Cook to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for food safety.

4. Assemble and Serve

Place your cooked patty on a toasted burger bun and add your favorite toppings:

  • Classic: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup, mustard

  • Cheese Lover’s: cheddar, Swiss, or mozzarella

  • Gourmet: sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, or barbecue sauce

🌟 Tips for the Best Homemade Burgers

  • Keep meat cold until shaping — warm fat melts too early and makes the burger dry.

  • Avoid pressing down on patties while cooking; it squeezes out the juices.

  • Let burgers rest for 2 minutes before serving to retain moisture.

  • Toast buns lightly for a better texture and flavor.

SURPRISE HAMBURGER PATTIES RECIPE

SURPRISE HAMBURGER PATTIES RECIPE

Who does not appreciate a succulent chargrilled beef burger topped with gooey cheese, zesty pickles, and fresh, crunchy vegetables? My family certainly does, which is why I frequently find myself preparing these incredibly tender burgers on a regular basis. They are remarkably simple to prepare, cost-effective, and require only one pan (or a barbecue!) and 22 minutes – how fantastic! Occasionally, I incorporate additional chopped vegetables into the burgers to enhance their nutritional value, and the inclusion of breadcrumbs in the mixture guarantees that the patties remain moist and are foolproof. I often prepare more patties than necessary since they are suitable for freezing and also serve as excellent lunchbox fillers.

Whether you grill your burgers outdoors during the summer for that added smoky flavor, or quickly create a kitchen version on a Friday night, you can be confident that these Juicy Homemade Beef Burgers will always satisfy. Their high level of customizability makes them appealing to the entire family – even picky eaters. Personally, I enjoy a classic combination of cheese, pickles, and red onion, but the rest of my family has their own preferences. Therefore, I sometimes melt the cheese onto the burgers in the pan, while serving the toppings in the center of the table so that everyone can assemble their own.

Freshly shredded lettuce, caramelized onions, coleslaw, avocado, or sautéed mushrooms are some delightful suggestions. Additionally, we can explore the “Aussie burger” option, which features canned beetroot, a fried egg, crispy bacon, and … pineapple! You cannot dismiss it until you have tasted it; it is incredibly delicious! If you are a garlic enthusiast, consider replacing the standard mayonnaise with aioli, and those who enjoy spice can add sriracha or another hot sauce – or blend some sriracha into the regular mayonnaise.

What should I serve alongside Juicy Homemade Beef Burgers? We enjoy Oven Baked Crispy Potato Wedges or a creamy Homemade Coleslaw! Other suggestions include steamed corn, Potato Salad, Macaroni and Cheese, a green leafy salad, or freezer chips (fries) for a quick dinner!

These Juicy Homemade Beef Burgers can be easily adapted into mini sliders! Simply divide the beef mixture into 12 portions and form them into patties. Equipment

Notes
Note 1 – Standard orange burger cheese slices are particularly suitable as they melt effortlessly and possess a smooth, creamy texture. However, I also enjoy using gouda due to its robust flavor.

Note 2 – I frequently prepare these beef patties by incorporating finely grated carrots and zucchini (courgette). These vegetables blend seamlessly into the patty, enhancing its flavor! Utilize a fine grater to shred up to 1 cup of vegetables to include in your mixture.

Make ahead:
Prepare the burger patties in advance by following the recipe instructions. Store the uncooked burger patties in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze them for a maximum of 3 months. Keep them in an airtight container or a reusable sandwich bag. Place baking paper between the layers of burger patties to prevent them from sticking together. Thaw completely overnight in the refrigerator and cook according to the recipe.

Leftovers:
Store leftover, cooked burger patties in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. Ensure they are thawed completely overnight before reheating. Reheat in the microwave to maintain moisture and achieve optimal results. Prepare the toppings fresh.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 2 med. potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 med. onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 c. grated cheese

Craft burgers to your liking and ensure they turn out impeccable every time with what I regard as the Best Hamburger Patty Recipe, in my modest opinion.

It’s a timeless all-American recipe for delectable burgers that can be prepared on the grill, on the stovetop, as thick 1/3 pound patties, or as ultra-thin griddle patties.

What makes this truly the Best Hamburger Patty Recipe?

These homemade burgers provide a rich and meaty flavor, enhanced by a burst of zesty herbs that can be tailored to your taste preferences. A few essential ingredients contribute to consistently producing juicy hamburger patties, regardless of your chosen cooking method.

While you will appreciate the fantastic savoriness of these homemade hamburgers on their own, they are also perfect for piling on your favorite toppings to create an exceptionally great burger. This is guaranteed to become your go-to recipe for easy homemade burger patties!

Ingredients You Require
The key to remarkably juicy burger patties is the inclusion of crushed crackers or panko breadcrumbs to retain the natural fat and juices.

We suggest using crackers if available. Incorporating crushed crackers is a traditional technique to enhance flavor beyond that of plain breadcrumbs. Additionally, it’s a convenient way to utilize that package of crackers you’ve had stored in the pantry for weeks.

Here is everything you need to prepare the best homemade burger patty recipe:
Ground chuck – We recommend an 80 lean/20 fat ratio for the juiciest burgers.
Crushed crackers or Panko bread crumbs – These are the ideal binders for juicy hamburgers. (They can be gluten-free!)
Worcestershire sauce – This ingredient imparts a rich beefy, smoky flavor.
Egg – Serves to bind all the components together without causing dryness.
Milk – The enzymes present assist in softening and tenderizing the ground beef.
Seasonings: Salt, Garlic Powder, Onion powder, Pepper, or any other preferred spices.

 Instructions.
To save on preparation time and enhance the flavor of your patties, it is advisable to use dried spices instead of fresh herbs in the hamburger mixture. For example, you might add red pepper flakes for a spicier burger, a touch of cumin and chili powder for a Southwestern flair, or parsley and dill for a Mediterranean flavor.

How To Create The Perfect Burger Every Time
It truly only requires a few minutes to prepare restaurant-quality homemade burgers from scratch. Organize your workspace and ingredients prior to beginning, and you will be serving hot plates from your home kitchen (or backyard) in no time!

Here’s how to do it…
First, prepare a large mixing bowl and add the ground beef, crushed crackers, egg, Worcestershire sauce, milk, and spices.
Utilize your hands to mix until the combination is completely smooth.
Ground beef combined with the other necessary ingredients for hamburger patties.
Ground beef blended with additional ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Next, flatten the meat in the bowl into a uniform disk. Use a knife to cut and separate the hamburger patty mixture into 6 – 1/3 pound grill or skillet patties or 12 thin griddle patties. Like this:
Prepare a baking sheet lined with wax paper or foil to hold the patties. One at a time, take the patty mixture and press firmly into patties of your desired thickness. Typically, hamburger patties should be.

The buns on which they will be served will slightly shrink during the cooking process.

Arrange the shaped patties on the baking sheet. For thicker patties, create an indentation in the center of each one to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.

If necessary, you may stack the patties with sheets of wax paper between each layer.

Next, preheat the grill or skillet to medium heat, around 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit. I particularly enjoy using a cast-iron skillet to achieve that mouthwatering caramelized sear on the burgers.

Hamburger patties should have indentations on top prior to cooking.
A spoon can be used to create a small dent in the hamburger patties before they are cooked.
Hamburger patties are being prepared in a cast iron skillet.
For thick patties: Grill or fry them for 3-4 minutes on each side for a medium burger.

For thin patties: Cook them on the griddle for 2 minutes on each side.

Ideally, you should only flip your burgers once or twice during the cooking process.

Pro Tip: Homemade cooked hamburger patties can be stored well when tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

How to Serve Homemade Hamburgers
Layer the hot patties on hamburger buns, and enhance them with your preferred toppings and condiments. One of my favorite condiments is Big Mac Sauce!

You might consider transforming your homemade burgers into a classic backyard barbecue style with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a touch of mayo and mustard.

Alternatively, my personal favorite burger features two thin patties, each topped with a slice of melted American cheese, along with tomato, pickles, crispy fried onions, and barbecue sauce.

Other excellent toppings include red onions, ketchup, and butter-grilled buns. Serve alongside either onion rings or sweet potato fries.

At the very least, we can agree that the finest homemade hamburgers are accompanied by a generous side of cajun fries, shoestring fries, or baked French fries!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Enhance the Flavor of Beef Burgers?
This straightforward and fundamentally simple recipe for Easy Homemade Hamburger Patties is perfect for personalizing with your preferred spices.

Consider adding some flavor enhancements by mixing in any of the following ingredients into the raw hamburger mixture, or placing them directly on top of your cooked burgers:

  • Crushed red pepper
  • Sliced serrano (spicy!) or jalapeno (milder) peppers
  • Chopped fresh scallions or cilantro
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Diced red or white onion
  • Shredded or crumbled cheeses such as cheddar, gouda, mozzarella, or blue cheese

How Can I Create the Best Gluten-Free Burger Patties?
While this specific recipe is not gluten-free, it can be easily modified by using gluten-free Panko breadcrumbs and gluten-free buns.

Is It Possible to Bake Them in the Oven?
When baking homemade burgers, it is essential to use high heat to form a crust on the exterior. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F and place a baking sheet inside so it becomes hot like a griddle. Once heated, transfer the patties to the hot pan. For thin patties, bake/roast for 2-3 minutes on each side. For thick patties, bake/roast for 5-6 minutes on each side.

Homemade hamburger patties can be stored well when tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
If you replace regular dried breadcrumbs with crackers or panko, reduce the amount to 1/4 cup. Regular breadcrumbs are denser and will result in a “meatloaf texture” if the usual quantity is used.
